*This happens about 20 or so years ago.* 3 weeks after the previous warlord was killed, Hundreds of high rank soldiers tried to fill in the position of warlord, by showing that they could defeat other soldiers trying to grab the potions. After a long day, the Announcer for the court ran in and said "WAIT, Milady, We have one more person. It is a lowly guardsmen but he wants to prove to you that he can do the job."

Milicia stood somewhat hesitant to respond to the Announcer's last minute change in the tournament. She was only a young lady of 20 but her parents had deemed that she needed experience in order to rule when they would pass away. As such they charged her with judging the necessary warrior to be the kingdom's warlord as her first offical task. She was hesitant to allow someone as lowly as a guardsmen in for the position of Warlord, yet she felt a pang of guilt in judging anyone by his station alone. She had always disliked the way her fellow lords and ladies snubbed the workers despite their loyal efforts to sustain her kingdom. It was one of her goals to guide her people not as a queen, but as a leader of her people.
"Okay, we'll give him a try. After all, every man deserves a chance." She said with some insecurity in her voice. She could already see her parents lecturing her later on the merits of "knowing your place in the world".

"Send the Guardsman in!" The Announcer yelled. In walked a man wearing the standard armor that a guardsman wear except for the helmet. One of the eye holes were covered with metal. "Hello milady" He said as he bowed in front of them "My name is Yeligar Maelstrom, A guardsmen of this castle."

As she watched the guardsman come through she couldn't help but notice the covered eye. She wondered for a moment how he lost it before she realized she was staring. She tried her best to look elsewhere on his face. "So young warrior, what makes you think you are worthy of the title warlord? Many of those that have come forward before you have served long and triumped in battle. Do you believe you possess something beyond what they have?"
She was trying her best to be fair, yet proper in this affair. Yet the man's missing eye and his youth made her interest peak as she waited to hear her answer.

"It is what I do not possess that makes me a better person to receive the title of Warlord. All of them are great warriors but because of their title and Fame, they were able to get a wife and children. I do not have a family, so therefore, I have nothing to lose if I do die in battle. But I respect this kingdom until I am slain. It is my mother and I will Fight my best and die for it." He said. "Is there not a part where I have to fight a warrior of my choosing?"

Milicia was impressed, if not a little intimidated my the man's fealty. Yet his words carried an air about them that told her he'd have the tenacity and strength of will to be a good warlord. "Your answer is admirable Yeligar, so if you wish to be tested in the arena then let it be so. Who do you wish to be your opponent? There are a couple of skilled generals that many of our men have called out recently."

"I am going to pick someone that I bet no one would ever consider fighting, because the person is so powerful, feared and respected. I believe it would be the greatest honor to fight..." He said before pulling out a metal lance with 5 thin blades sticking out of it and he pointed it at Milicia "...You, milady."

The guards shouted all around Yeligar. "Treason!" "Insolent Knave!" "Seize this man at once!"
There voices roared as a few men quickly restrained him, pushing him to his knees. Many demanded he be thrown out, while the more bloodythirsty asked he by put to death.
"ENOUGH!" One strong and feminine voice broke through the vicious mob's. It was Milicia who stood from her seat, her lips pursed in anger while her eyes glared at her men. She thrusted a single finger out at the soldiers grappling Yeligar and spoke with the presence of a true ruler. "Release him at once!" Despite her tone and appearance she felt rattled by the sudden commontion and hoped no one would notice the unsteady shaking of her outstretched arm. Trying her best to do what she'd seen her parents do so often she kept her expression angry.
"My dear Yeligar, you should know that to dare challenge one of your lords or ladies in a bout would be punishable by exile at least in this kingdom." Many of the soldiers cheered her on with this. "Except on a day such as this." Total silence now, save for her stern voice. "This contest holds no bars on who you may challenge, yet for a matter this delicate we will battle with non-lethal methods only. Do you understand Yeligar?"
With this all eyes turned towards him. Some with interest, while many still held venom in their gaze.

"Of course, I would die for you. I meant the challenge with the up most respect for you, milady." He said as he stood up. "You may have the first strike."

She rose from her throne as two of the soldiers rushed behind her. Making short work of the clasps and drawstrings that secured her gown to her, they pulled it over her to reveal a sleek fencing uniform. Another soldier moved to the front and bowed as he held a practise estoc in his outstretched hands, while another was quick to remove Yeligar's weapon and give him a suitable replacement.
Standing poised to strike, her weapon held out at Yeligar she spoke calmly, "If you are ready Yeligar, then here I come." Milicia shoved off her back foot, keeping her body sideways as she lunged forwards at the guardsmen. With her light figure and agile footwork she covered the distance in mere moments and made a quick thrust at his chest, hoping to get in too close for Yeligar to make use of his lance.
As she made her first strike, she muttered softly under her breath, the magic slowly flowly out from her. A few spells she knew by heart at this time in her training, and decided to protect herself just in case Yeligar proved to be more than what he appeared.

Yeligar used the hilt of his "new" lance to block her estoc. "Great footwork, milady" he said. He hopped back and swung down his lance gently at her.

Milicia was somewhat fearful of the sheer weight the lance might have as it came down and quickly hopped off to the side to avoid it. Now at his flank she slid in close and performed a few simple slashes in order to keep Yeligar on the defensive as she finished her spell. A quick shine of light sparked from around her as a translucent glow formed around her body.
Off in the distance every guest and employee of the castle had dropped what they were doing to see the battle. Many cheered and roared in the queen's favour while a few voices could be heard amoungst the them rooting Yeligar on. Milicia knew that she could not lose this fight no matter what. In addition to losing face with every member of the court, she knew the terrible scolding her parents and fencing instructor would give her should she lose to this man.

Yeligar backed up as the spark covered Milicia. "Nice spell, milady" he said, as he stuck out his hand and snapped his fingers. a gentle breeze blew into the room.

"You need not tell me how good I am Yeligar, I'm here to see how good you are. Now prove yourself!" Feeling confident, not only in her own performance but in the reassuring warmth of her protective spell she continued her barrage of attacks. She took only passing notice of the breeze as she kept pressing him with swipes, slashes and thrusts towards Yeligar.
As of now she had been unimpressed with the guardsmen and felt somewhat annoyed and embarrassed for allowing him not only the privilege of participating but allowing him to challenge her directly.

"Okay, milady." he said. He hopped back and thrust his lance at Milicia. He was too far back, but the wind pushed her backwards. Then he appeared behind her with his lance's hilt just above her neck. The wind had gotten a little stronger. "Is this what you were thinking of, Milady? Or should I just break this barrier?"
