"Again."
Once more.
You're doing it wrong.
Now really, Grand Daughter!!"
Annabelle shook her head during hers and Jasmine's little magical spar in the...afternoon? Was it afternoon? Annabelle could hear the rapids in the distance still in full rage so it was apparently still daylight. She wasn't one to travel to Ketulunanox often and when she did, she had a damn good reason to do so. This one was training Jasmine Loque, her grand daughter.
Annabelle was quite the pushy trainer, however. Jasmine was still very new to her abilities and as they grew each day, Annabelle had more to teach her. It was her own personal dream to see her grand daughter surpass her and accomplish the goals that she could not--but first, Jasmine had to master her second spell list.
And she was fumbling her incantations!
"Enunciate! Dark spells will backfire badly if you mess it up!" Annabelle barked at a failed fireball.

Annabelle wasn't the only one getting impatient. Jasmine was just about at her last thread of patience herself trying to conjure up everything she could remember and fire it off at her grandmother, only to be consistently criticized. Light magic was easy, though this offensive dark spell stuff had been really getting to her.
Jasmine kept trying to remind herself that this was what she had chosen, and should she bring up any complaints with her grandmother she knew very well she'd be told the same thing if not worse by the older woman.
"Dovul samai!" Jasmine spoke clearly, loudly, and slowly as she stretched her fingers wide and pointed her attack towards Annabelle, flames dancing between her fingers before releasing towards the older woman though they splintered off in multiple directions and died in mid-air five feet before coming in contact with Annabelle.

Annabelle cursed loudly at the young girl's failed attempt.
"Dovul sa-mae!" Annabelle corrected Jasmine, palms outstretched and watched as a massive ball of flames tore through the crater towards her grand daughter.

Seeing the fiery blast zip straight for her made Jasmine panic, her thoughts halted entirely. The whole scene moved in short seconds, to Jasmine feeling longer, though somehow in an almost-too-late movement Jasmine habitually conjured up a defensive wall of light to block the attack. Or rather she wished it blocked, half of it managed to explode upon meeting the wall and singe the blonde girl on the other side causing her to shriek and slump to the ground.
Jasmine looked down at her left hand, whatever fine hair had been there had been entirely burnt off, top of the forearm and down to her hand and even in patches on her fingers stung from the flames, some burn spots already started to blister as she examined them.
Letting out a very defeated huff, Jasmine glared at her injury, brought down the wall once the fire had subsided and stormed off back towards the main road as her way of saying she was done for the day.

"Where's the counter?!"
Cursed to all high hell, the girl was better than this most days! What was her issue now? That Andy kid was distracting her again, wasn't he?
"Where are you going?! Training isn't over, Jasmine Annalise!" the old woman shouted after her grand daughter. Seeing Jasmine continuing to keep her distance Annabelle shook her head and muttered angrily to herself as she followed the young woman.
"There are big things coming and it's important you practice up on this! It's not going to be easy but giving up isn't how you will succeed as a great twilight mage! This isn't how your mother raised you!!"

Jasmine stopped for a moment as Annabelle called out to her, partially because she needed the moment to gather her thoughts and give her grandmother a what-for but also because her grandmother wasn't going to ever catch up to her if she marched off and didn't wait a few steps in between.
"I know you'll tell me it's my own fault, but I'm not sure..." Jasmine paused as she glanced at the scar on her hand, the one she'd done to herself in the shape of what symbolized Lares, the twilight god. In a time when she felt useless and wished with every fiber of her being to be granted the ability to do something to support--even protect--Andy, this felt so right. Putting her soul on the line and forcing herself to become acquainted with light and dark magic, enchantments, curses, and hexes seemed like the only thing to do in a world that was threatened by a mad man.
She'd grown stronger. She was stronger, smarter, braver, and really liked helping people but now felt that somehow this pact she'd made had been unnecessary. If anything, it was terrifying and it boggled her how her grandmother managed to live her life as long as she had knowing that at any moment she could just go insane and disappear, forever possessed by a crazed spirit. Now being the light magic-using healer just seemed so much simpler.
"...I'm not sure if I really like doing this, Grandmother."

"Talking like that isn't how you get stronger."
Andy observed from his position on a ledge, near the training ground along with Leah -who was twirling her yo-yo idly.
"The only way you get stronger is to have the conviction to get stronger," he said, "When you face an enemy, a real one, only one thought needs to enter your mind: show him you are stronger than him no matter what."
"That's it?" Leah asked.
"Worked well for me," Andy shrugged.

Hearing this as ironic as it was made Jasmine smile. Even if she wasn't sure she entirely agreed, the words coming from Andy still felt very comforting. She remembered a time when he trained relentlessly and felt he was doing no good and turned to more upsetting solutions, though the talk was familiar. She felt like giving up just as he did once before.
"Thank you, Andy. This is hard sometimes, and I know what I'm doing I could use to help many people but I still find it hard to shake the feeling that I don't have to do this, almost like it was a bad idea and I would have been better before," she sighed and shrugged, "I don't know."

"Well..." Andy paused for a moment, trying to figure out how to best proceed in this. "What are you unsure of? You've done things you wanted to because you wanted to, now you tell me a part of you is unsure and that's why this is hard for you so I ask: what is it you're afraid will change?"

"I guess I'm..." Jasmine frowned and fidgeted her eyebrows as she tried to place exactly what it was on her mind, "I guess I almost feel like I acted a little too rashly in my own decisions. I never really thought too much about what I was doing back when I agreed to do this, just that I wanted to be a better help. I was promised to do so much as long as I...basically opened my soul to the spirit world. I'm fine now, and as long as I keep training I should be alright, most of us twilight mages seem to have a decent track record.
I guess I'm more afraid of...disappearing on you. There's always that chance. If I face an obstacle too much for me to overcome I could still be me but completely insane, taken over by some crazy ghost or something. It's just a fear, really."

Jasmine was given a rough shove by a wrinkled hand, surprisingly strong for an older woman such as Annabelle.
"That's what the training is for to begin with! There's a reason why the Fraus women managed to survive this many centuries and still be in the business!"

Andy resisted a scowl in Anabelle's direction before answering Jasmine, "You won't disappear Jas, not like that. You pulled me out when I threatened to disappear, from that thing inside me, if you can pull me out of that than you have a stronger will than you give yourself credit for."

Jasmine shook her grandmother off of her as she was shoved, having her impatience rise with her. If it wasn't her own doubts picking at her brain it was her grandmother picking at her tolerance levels.
She remembered the days when Andy would change on her, to something else that was hidden inside him and fought to get out, to use his body as it so pleased. It was a scary transformation and there were several times when she felt she really had lost Andy for awhile. It was funny hearing something similar now coming from Andy, a talk about that 'evil something inside of you' trying to fight its way out, though Jasmine wasn't housing anything evil. No, she had the ability to absorb for moments at a time another person's abilities, good or evil, as long as her own mental capacity was still intact and she had the will to overcome what power they may have. She had that potential. She had the support (well, from one person anyway) from her family and friends to let her know she was strong enough to handle something like this.
"You really do think what I've done has been a good choice? It's definitely not something I've ever imagined myself doing. At first it was simple spells but moving on things are getting a little complicated," Jasmine smiled up at Andy, "the change is hard. This isn't something my mother can help me with anymore, in or beyond her grave."

Andy smiled back, "We haven't really seen any harm it has brought so far...I am sure if you feel like the magic is becoming too deadly or is beginning to change who you are you'll recognize it."
He did frown for a moment, "Though...I suppose whatever new conflict is about to happen will be the time to see what your magic can do, not much has changed here...even with Trucido gone."

Jasmine poked her bottom lip out in a pout as she crossed her arms.
"You're right, nothing much has changed. When my life was all about reading and practicing medicine at home with Mother I had all I needed. Now with you opening my eyes up to so much more it's almost like I need more adventure in my life to keep happy," she let out a chuckle as she listened to what she was saying, "we'll see what happens with my magic. I want to see what I can do, what I can't do, and what else will come our way. It's like you and I need some crazy power-obsessed monster to keep us together. W-working, I mean."
