Crescent
adj.
1. Crescent-shaped.
2. Waxing, as the moon; increasing.
The word crescent is derived etymologically from the present participle of the Latin verb crescere "to grow", thus meaning "waxing" or "increasing", and so was originally applied to the form of the waxing moon (luna crescens).
Player: Miri
Name: Kato Shinobu (Shinobu = given name, Shin for short)
Description: A tall teenager with black hair, streaked with red, and yellow eyes. People have commented on his resemblance to King Ayalan, but he personally doesn't see it. Hailing from Chalybs, his clothing is a bit more modern and Earth-style than most Allorans', but he is Alloran. Around his right arm, he wears a blackened metal band with a red flame on it to hide the strange tattoo-like marking he has there. The flame on the band corresponds exactly with the flame on his arm, while the actual Mark has the flame being cupped by a crescent moon.
Age: 17
Personality: Cold and distant from most people, Shin rarely, if ever, deigns to make friends. Most people he meets dislike him due to his sarcastic, standoffish nature. Internally, this is a mechanism to keep from being hurt or betrayed - he doesn't trust or believe he deserves to be trusted by anyone.
Place of Origin/Home: Chalybs, though he was born in Ignis
Alignment: Good
Occupation:He works a crappy job as a waiter, but he's terrible at it because he hates people. In his free time, he does freelance metalwork. He has since quit his job to travel the world with the Lunar Knights, attempting to learn about his power.
Equipment: Mostly several accessories he made himself. Most of them have emblems of fire or moons on them; his prize possession is a silver ring he wears on his right hand with patterns of flames around the band, tinted red. He also made his armband, and he wears a metal bracelet on each wrist.
Weapons: Shin prefers to fight with his hands.
Combat: Shin is a skilled fire mage, able to channel flame throughout his body into a distinctive, flame-augmented martial-arts style. He prefers to fight up-close, although he can create long-range blasts of fire. (AN: Yes, he fights like Zuko in the first two seasons of ATLA.)
Augmenting his attacks with the element of fire isn't all that he has learned to do; using fire-aligned ki strikes, he can increase the power of his attacks dramatically, without ever physically manifesting flames.
Magic: Shin, as mentioned above, is a talented fire mage; he has innate, instinctive control over the element, and channels it through his body as though it were an extension of himself. Unfortunately, when he loses his calm, he also loses that control - occasionally leading to 'blackout' periods, after which he can't remember anything he did. His pyromancy is much, much stronger during these periods, and they leave him terribly drained afterwards.
Like most Lunar Knights, he is immune to his own element; it is possible for him to absorb fire, though he doesn't know how at this point other than as an instinctive, desperation move - this will put him much closer to losing control.
Flaws: Shin's personality is incredibly acidic and offputting, which means he has few friends. He has been mostly a loner all his life because of it, and his social skills are a bit lacking because of it. His temper has a profound negative effect on his fire magic, as well. Due to events in his history, he is also very, very nervous about his own fire - while he has trained himself to be better about it, he's still not 100% cool with it. Every time he loses control, it can set him back months of working on the fear.
History: Shin's mother was Ignisian, and his father was Chalybsian; this mixed heritage gave him an affinity for both fire and metal in equal turns, though he always felt more at home with fire than anything else in the world. As a kid, he was a lot less cynical than he is now - but everything changedwhen the fire nation attacked the night his mother died.
Wildfires in Ignis are common - common enough that most people don't make any big deal of them. Like tornado or hurricane season, destructive but expected.
But the season that year was bad, very bad, and Kato Sakura and her son went out to try and help the villages push back the flames.
ANd something happened out i the fields. THe wind picked up; the fire jumped. They were trapped, cut off from the surroundings. No one could control the raging blaze.
Sakura tried. Shin tried. The fire spread, inwards and outwards, and there was nothing they could do. Shin remembers getting angry, and then a tree fell, engulfed in flame, and his mother pushe dhim out fo the way.
An ember breaking off of the tree smacked into Shin's face, causing the distinctive burn scar he has to this day. His mother was crushed beneath the burning branches.
Shin doesn't remember anything after that; the villagers do. They say he just went crazy, screaming out her name as he waded into the fire, untouched by the flames. He ripped the tree off of her in a burst of inhuman strength; then, gold eyes burning the color of molten metal, he literally absorbed all of the fire before passing out in a heap on the now-clear grass. He slept for a week.
After that, his father brought him to Chalybs and forbid him from experimenting with fire magic, or mentioning his mother's name. He began to cover up the marking on his arm, a mark that the villagers say glowed with fire and moonlight when he had his episode.
But he still practices. He still works towards getting rid of his fear of his own powers and abilities, training every day in secret. Anger management classes, martial arts training - he channels his fire through those venues as a means to control what he feels is a raging beast inside him.
Sometime during these years, he met Rin Tezuka, local armless street artist and his (currently) only friend. Occasionally, he lets her enamel his pieces with her steady hand... er, foot... and he splits whatever money he gets for them with her. Metalworking is one thing he does incredibly well, still, and he promised himself that he would finish one thing for Rin, in return for the kindness, friendship, and bluntness with which she treated everyone.
As for his new home in Chalybs... he actually loves it there. Surrounded by metal and controlled fire, he has adapted well to the more industrial lifestyle of the country, and he's become rather enamored of some of the new sports emerging - namely, skating and freerunning through the city's metal streets.
---
Ater leaving Chalybs, he set out with Vash, Kurai, and company to receive training as a Lunar Knight. Despite that training, he still dislikes using his fire magic and has been unable to contact his Lunar, Valerian, except through dreams. Unbeknownst to Shin himself, he is actually Valeria's son by a mortal woman.
Other: Because Bang Shishigami never really did anything, I'm replacing the Lunar Knight of Fire with this guy, if tha'ts cool with you.
