Mark Fri, has been an RPer on the site since in beginning of the site. He has lead the Saint arc, and is currently leading the Saint arc II: The Fall. His most popular characters are Mark Angelus Fri, Kain Angelo, and Enizo. I finally had some time to sit down with him and talk to him.
I am Volkmar, and I will be interviewing Mark Fri. How are you Mark?
Mark: I'm doing great, thanks for asking.
Alright, now for the first question: How did you get into Forum RPs?
Mark: The first forum I was ever on was something known as Quest for Ultragem. It was a nice small board, a very good place to start out at.
For those that do not know what that was about, could you give a brief synopsis on what the forum was about?
Mark: It was pretty basic. There was a group of good guys and bad guys who battled out in a fantasy world for these ultra powerful things known as Ultragems, it was never story heavy like CR can get. I once again, played Mark Angelus Fri and it lasted for a good couple of months.
Some of the best stuff are basic. Alright, but let's talk about CR, what made you interested in joining the site?
Mark: The areas were well made and the plot seemed like it was going to be fun. Everyone who was beginning to rp on it were all good friends of mine, which really helped considering my rping style and plot writing were... well, let's just say it'd take a friend to accept it.
Well we all start from somewhere. You mention Mark Angelus Fri. He was an important character in the first 3 arcs ; Sumatas, Saint, and War. You mention that you made him on another site, what was the insperation behind this character?
Mark: Mark goes back so far, he was at first made to repersent me in a fanfiction known as Keys of Destiny. From there he kinda took on a life of his own, but the Mark on CR is actually very different for the fact that he was never with his two brothers that almost always were there - or mentioned- in everything he had been in.
So to answer your question, Mark was inspired by myself but became something I can't really compare to. He's such a different character from where he started.
Well he is quite liked on the site. Before the Sumatas arc was finished, you asked Volkmar about running an arc for the site. He gave you permission and you created the Saints arc, becoming one of the most popular arcs on the forum. Could you share on how you created the idea for the Saint arc?
Mark: Ohhhh the Saints, they actually came from a comic at the time I was writing (DON'T AS TO SEE IT). At first I was planning on making all of the Saints myself, but thankfully Mike had some sort of forsight and convinced me out of it.
But the basic idea of the Saints when I brought it over to CR was this: this is what the Heroes could become if they're not careful.
: Ah a foreshadowing, interesting. Now, you rped as 4 of the saints; Kain Angelo, Grey Highlander, Alessia, and Nathan Firefly (who betrayed the saints before the arc) in the arc. If you can pick, which one of these were your favorite to RP as?
Mark: I really enjoyed Kain and Grey, they were so completely different. Grey did stupid stuff and Kain would put him in his place. It was indeed a very brotherly relationship.
Alright, let’s talk about Kain first. Kain Angelo was the leader of the Saints, and the primary antagonist in the Saint arc. Where there anything that inspired you to make such a character?
Mark: I wanted to make a character that was evil, but not so evil that it turned everyone against him. The goal was to make an enemy that would make the Heroes really THINK about their future. I can't say if there was anything that directly inspired me to make Kain, though.
Did you believe you accomplished that?
Mark: Yes, Kain's legacy live on in many characters and he's also something of the 'Leader to be'. At least I think so. XD
Alright cool, now onto Grey. You have a nuke powered Marine from Earth. What was the driving force behind this character?
Mark: The driving force behind Grey was to make someone who on the outside looked very harmless but is really just a massive powerhouse. What is more powerful than a nuke? (WAIT. I got an answer - Freakin. Brea.)
: For the Saint arc, what did you think of the recruitment of the other saints, such as Nia or Van?
Mark: Those guys are really the ones that made the arc so good. The Saints wouldn’t have been anything without characters like Roxa, ABA, Nia ect. I love them all, they all brought something really great to the arc.
: Ah yes. After the Sumatas' War arc, you retired Mark for a while and made a new character, Enizo. Why did you feel that you needed a new main character?
Mark: I felt I handled Mark wrong. He was very powerful - too powerful. I feared he'd become the character every villain will try and beat and I didn't want that to happen.
So with him being back I'm trying to be very careful with him as to not make the same mistake. It's not easy, but you might notice the complete elimination of Solaris.
Ah interesting. Enizo, your new main, is a part of a group of Allorum Guardians. Could you explain what exactly is Allorum Guardians?
Mark: Well it was originally inspired off one of Miri's character who was part of the Earth's Guardians. I don't know much about them but the AG kinda grew on its own.
The Guardians were made by the Mentor, some super old guy who wears a badass armor and a suit AT THE SAME TIME, and they're entire goal was to help move Allorum to become a better world. They're a 'declining' group, but even still their numbers outnumber all of the other groups, perhaps somthing around 8000-11,000 people left in it.
That's a big fall from the 100,000 that used to make up the group, though. They've taken a center stage role in the arc in attempt to unite the world against Duo, although you're really seeing th failure to do so as a decline in respect that they used to hold. Perhaps Enizo is the only one who has had some slight success in doing so.
Interesting. So Speaking of Duo, let’s talk about the current arc. How have you been feeling about it so far?
Mark: I'm really happy with how it's been going - it's a complex story that spans thousands of years, there is a great amount of drama and maybe more importantly of all a great amount of people putting their own little plotlines in, using these events to help expand their own story.
And that's awesome, I'm always happy to see when they inject a little bit of their own idea into it.
So you have had been a head villain before, with Kain. With Duo, are you planning to try something different with Duo, or make your villainous rping style similar?
Mark: Kain was hardly a villain, I think. More like just a person drove to the edge of it all and just said 'F*** IT.' Duo on the other hand, he is similar in the thought that he really thinks he's helping the world, but some of the things he does that other people would say is 'disgusting' is just the means to the good end, for him.
Alright. Now let's talk about the future. After the Fall, are you planning anything we should keep an eye out?
Mark: Not in the near future, but I got some ideas for later...
Okay. Thank you for your time, Mark.
Mark: No problem, it was fun talking to you.
If you would like to an interview done about you, contact either Mike or I and we will try to set it up.
