Name: Vash, the Angel's Moon
Description: A tall, young, harmless-seeming man usually wearing a goofy expression. Always wears a long, red coat with many black buttons, and sometimes yellow, strangely-shaped sunglasses. If seen without the coat, he carries many scars from the long years of his life. His blond hair is spiked up in all directions. The coat itself is tattered and worn along the hemline, and close examination of it will reveal that it has been mended many, many times, with careful stitches set in thread the same color as the fabric. These stitchings also form the seal that keeps his powers in check. When fully released, he gains iridescent wings of energy, and is often surrounded by a pale golden glow.
Age: Ageless
Personality: Appearing light-hearted at first, Vash's personality is a combination between a carefully-crafted mask and a kind nature, allowing only some of his true self to shine through. This is a defensive mechanism; by keeping himself at arm's length from the world, he can never make the kinds of connections he lost when the first person he ever cared for was killed. He always tries to look on the bright side.
Beneath this 'outer shell', Vash is truly a serious-minded individual who cares deeply for each and every living thing, except maybe the ones who are trying to eat him. He never quite manages to achieve the detachment he dreams of; instead, he helps everyone he meets, deciding that he must never do anything he will have to regret for the rest of his eternal life. He hates necromancy with a passion, believing it to be unnatural, and a good portion of his wanderings are dedicated to rooting it out and destroying it, as well as saving the tortured souls trapped by undeath.
Place of Origin/Home: Vash was created within one of Ketuluna's few surviving space colonies, though he later descended to Allorum. Since then, he has called Lunatopia home, though he considers Guasto his spiritual home.
Alignment: Good
Occupation: Lunar Spirit of Guasto
Equipment: A long, dusty red coat with too many buttons, and a large cross-shaped stone which holds some significance for him; it is always wrapped in cloth. It glows in the presence of undeath and necromancy. When the cloth is removed, the cross is revealed to be hollow, with a crystal suspended in the center by a net of wire.
Weapons: A .45 revolver, one of the few guns existing in Allorum, though he will rarely use it; when he does draw it, he will only shoot to injure. His cross, which channels his power, is also a weapon; when its full power is released, it bonds with Vash's arm and becomes the Angel's Cannon.
Combat: Vash dislikes combat and will avoid it whenever possible; when combat is unavoidable, he uses his gun to cripple his opponent, allowing Vash to escape; if he needs to use any of his Lunar abilities, he will use them bound, in order to draw attention to himself.
Once he releases his first limiter, whether by removing his coat, or releasing the binding on his cross, he will begin to use the cross as a weapon, either as a shield or a bludgeon. He can channel his energy through it, which is his preferred method of dispatching the undead, or draw energy out of it to temporarily summon his wings or a wide shield, an ability he usually uses to keep innocents out of the fighting.
If truly in danger, or if it is required to protect innocent lives, he will release both limiters, giving him access to his full power. When fully released, Vash's fighting style becomes a whirlwind combination of Lunar blasts, cross attacks, and volleys of bullets from his gun, which he can also enhance with spiritual and Lunar energy. Vash's ultimate ability, the Angel's Cannon, is a last-ditch effort, something he will ever only use if the danger to others outweighs the damage he will do when using it. This ability is likely one that he will never use again on this forum.
Magic: As the Lunar Spirit of Guasto, saying that Vash's abilities are 'unique' is a vast understatement. Vash is the embodiment of the magical element of Death, created to purify, stabilize, and focus this power; thus, practitioners of magic utilizing the energies of Death will find that their spells are more potent when he is around. He can sense death's presence, as when someone has died or is near death, and as the antithesis of Black necromancy, can destroy most lesser undead outright. His powers can safely send a soul on to eternal rest in the afterlife.
As a Lunar Spirit, Vash shares some abilities with all of his 'siblings'; he may directly use Lunar energy from Ketuluna, and is able to communicate through prayer with his "Mothers", the moon goddesses, although he has admitted to not being very good at this. He may also borrow power from his sisters and brothers, either through a direct connection to them, or through their Lunar Knights (only with permission, of course).
As far as combat abilities go, most of Vash's magic centers on Wisps, fragments of passed souls that no longer contain consciousness. Given form by the energies of Death, most wisps are found in Guasto; however, Vash can also give them form, and he can release the energies within them for a variety of useful effects, from forming barriers and blasts of energy, to the creation of his wings when still partially bound. Manipulating these energies is as natural as breathing to him while unbound, though it takes a more significant portion of his energy to use his abilities while bound.
Vash's most powerful ability is used when he combines his cross with his own body to create the Angel's Cannon, a weapon with legendary, mythological power. The Cannon concentrates all Lunar energy around Vash, including his own, into a single, powerful shot. Depending on his intent at the time of its use, the weapon has, in the past, caused incredible destruction; for that reason, he will never release it in anger, and almost never releases it at all.
Flaws: Vash will not kill a sentient opponent, period, and will go out of his way to avoid conflict. He's also clumsy and an idiot... most of the time. He's also got a knack for wandering into bad situations completely on accident. He will never take a potential kill shot unless he knows for a fact that his foe will survive it. He deliberately limits his full powers to keep from having undue influence on the world, as well as to keep those who wish to use his powers for themselves from finding him. Even when released, he cannot use his strength to its full efficiency due to the effects of living without it every day.
History: Vash's history is four thousand years long, far too long to tell within the scope of a few paragraphs. However, there are a few key events which have shaped him into the man he is today.
Four thousand years before the present day, Ketuluna was destroyed by the gods. The survivors were those who had fled to the colony ships, or onto the Sky Hook, and it was on one of those colony ships, the being known as Vash was born.
The Ketulunans, scattered and defeated, were distrusted by those from Allorum. As a gift of peace, thirteen 'moons' were to be created and given to each existing kingdom of Allorum, moons which would focus and control the elements bound to each land. This gift would, ultimately, be refused - but our tale begins before that.
For each of these moons was created a spirit, to bind and focus the moon's purpose, and these spirits were ensouled into the moons, bound to the heavenly vessels.
One spirit, the spirit of Guasto's moon, however, would not ensoul. When the mage-scientists of Ketuluna tried to force the process, a terrible accident happened; the vessel exploded, the magic backlashed into the ones controlling it, and one of the scientists, a man named Kiran, died. Presented with an empty, suitable vessel, drawn by the energy of the element it was bound to, the spirit ensouled.
When Kiran's eyes opened, it was Vash who looked out of them.
Unsure and confused, Vash slowly adjusted to his new life with the help of Kiran's fiancee, Shiira, who became the center of his world for the next several years. Growing in confidence, he began to help out wherever he could, including helping to ensoul several of the other moons. It was at this point that Vash began limiting his power, to prevent it from interfering with the scientists' work; his coat (or, at least, his -first- coat) was a gift from Shiira, given to him during this time - it would prove invaluable in the months ahead. It was also around this time that Vash carved his cross from the remnants of his intended vessel.
The news that all but one of the Ketulunans' gifts had been refused was devastating, as they had, all of them, already been set in place - an accident of miscommunication that threatened to send Allorum to war. It was Vash and Shiira - along with several of their colleagues - who proposed the solution: an order of Knights to control and filter the Moons' power, passed down through the generations and chosen by the Moons they served. The kings of Allorum accepted the solution, and a pact was made that the Lunar Knights' creation would end the war before it began. Thirteen of the Ketulunan scientists were chosen, including Shiira, and they became the first Lunar Knights, swearing themselves to secrecy, that their existence would reduce itself to mere legend in the coming generations.
The creation of the Knights, however, didn't stop all of the fighting; plenty of hatred and fear remained for the Ketulunans. On a single night, soon after the official end of hostilities, a home-brewed army stormed the Ketulunan territory that would eventually become Ketulunanox, and slaughtered the populations of three of Ketuluna's colonies.
One of those who died was Shiira. In a rage, Vash released all of his power and killed the entire army. Sitting amongst the dead, he remembered Shiira's words that all life was precious, that because he had a soul, he desrved to live; he realized that he had just taken the lives of hundreds of innocents. From that day on, he swore never to kill again, to never do anything else which he might regret, because he knew he'd regret it forever.
Throughout the next four thousand years, Vash would wander the known world; though he called Lunatopia, the last remaining fully-Ketulunan city, his home, he found himself unable to stay in one place. During those thousands of years, he came into contact with many people, some of whom became friends, others, mortal enemies. He became a hunter of all things undead and made sure to keep out of most of the important conflicts, letting the humans of Allorum settle their own problems, and placing himself firmly into the role of observer.
Reappearing once again after the destruction of Lunatopia put him out, his terrible luck earned him the name "Vash the Stampede" and he found himself on the run from more than just those who would seek to learn his identity and misuse his powers. During the Sumata War, he ran into Volkmar and Tidus, forming what he feels is a fast friendship with the Spiran and the Lunar Knight (who just so happens to have been chosen by his favorite little sister).
In the year that has passed since then, he resumed his wanderings, only becoming involved once more with the return of the heroes, and the threat of the rogue Ketulunans threatening the planet he has come to call 'Home'. He's grown quite fond of Yuna, one of the new generation of Heroes.
When Volkmar became the Moonless Devil and threatened his new friends, Vash found he had no choice but to reveal his identity to the world...
