When A.B.A. awoke all she could tell was that it was night and that her head must have been hit harder then she could have ever recalled. Sitting up she bounced softly on the comfortable down of a mattress. The room she was in was sparsely decorated, with only a bed, window and a few trinkets and toys that clearly meant nothing to her. At the distant wall Paracelsus laid staring at her, his unblinking eyes snapping out of their usual daze as he saw her get up.
"A.B.A., thank goodness you're awake. I feared you weren't ever going to open your eyes after that explosion." His raspy voice cracked with worry.
"Huh, hmm..." It was all she could manage for a reply as she stumbled to her feet, attempting to take a step towards him before falling down hard on the wooden floor. "Where am I?" She mumbled as she tried to get up. Suddenly the door threw open as a young girl ran to A.B.A.
“Oh dear please don’t get up so soon. You’re still weak from that explosion. Here, lie still.” The young girl was dressed in a warm blue dress, a white shawl covering her brown hair and neck. A.B.A. did as she was told, her vision barely able to make out the maiden as she moved her hands over A.B.A. slowly. She whispered soft shapeless words, no understandable beginning or end as warmth caressed her skin. She looked down to see that once charcoal black patches of skin slowly began to return to their pale, peachy color.
The young maiden breathed a soft sigh, then giggled a little. “You’re very lucky you know. When I found you those burn marks were as big as dinner plates.” She got to her feet and rushed out of sight into another room. “I don’t know how you managed to survive that blast at all. My home was a good mile away from where I found you, and this room’s about the only one that doesn’t have a hole in it.” Popping back into the room she held in her hand a small intricate symbol made of silver.
“Ugh, f***ing Grey. I can’t believe he did that.” Her eyes looked up towards her savior. “Are you a Hero?” Her eyes narrowed, her vision slowly returning to her thanks to the healing magic.
The brunette girl smiled and giggled to herself, clearly embarrassed by A.B.A.’s comment. “You’re sweet but no, I’m just a girl trying to help out a little in this world. I saw that blast and came running to see if there were any injured people. I found you and your friend not too far from here and brought you here to recover. You’ve been asleep for a good day and a half now. I was kind of scared. I haven’t brought someone back as far gone as you before.” She held out the symbol towards A.B.A, it reacting with the same warmth A.B.A. felt on her skin, only much more powerful then before. Many of the splotches cleared up, and she at last felt right in her mind.
Shaking her head, the fear of disappointment and shame were the first thoughts in her cleared head. She worried what Kain and the others would think, that one of their own had been so foolish to have been caught in friendly fire. A.B.A. slammed her hands against her knees in anger. “Stupid! Stupid stupid stupid…” She trailed off. If only I had more power.
The young healer bent down, holding A.B.A.’s shaking form in her arms. “Shhhhhh, shhh it’s okay. Don’t worry, you’re safe and sound. That’s all that matters. I prayed really hard to the God of Light, and he’ll make sure you stay safe.”
A.B.A.’s ears perked up at the girl’s words. “You…say you can talk to a god?”
“Yep, that what gives me my power. My mom taught me how. That’s how I got my symbol of power too. Mama says I’m ready to go to the city and take the exam to become an apprentice cleric. I admit I was really nervous, but after I helped take care of you I’m sure I can do it now.” She hugged A.B.A. tightly with glee, a bouncy enthusiasm visible on her face.
A.B.A. smiled back. “Thank you, and yes I’m sure you’ll do just fine. You look like you have a lot of strength.” A.B.A. clutched her stomach. “I don’t suppose you have some food?” She moaned weakly.
“No worries, now you just sit put and I’ll grab some for you.” As the young one disappeared once more to the kitchen, A.B.A. slowly moved back to her feet. Walking close she braced herself against Paracelsus, glad to feel the familiar touch of his cold metal body once more.
“I was scared for you. What would I have done had you not survived?” He spoke softly to her.
“I was thinking the very same thing.” She whispered as she embraced him, the key glowed and turned into a pair of small daggers.
“Okay, I’ve got a little soup ready for lunch. I hope you like tomato-ugk!” The young woman cried out softly. A.B.A. stood in front, her blade deep within the healer’s heart. Her eyes stared back with a hollow pain as the blade twisted, ending her quickly. A.B.A. let her fall to the ground, her free hand gliding across the key shaped decoration in her forehead.
“I’ve lost so much in my long sleep. Slowly I’ll reclaim it.” A.B.A. spoke in her normal manner. Gripping firmly at the key’s handle she pulled if free from her head, the ornament freeing itself magically. Slowly she slipped it into the girl’s head, the key pulsing with wisps of many different colors as each one circled the small ornament. At last each one vanished into it, and A.B.A. nestled it back into her skull. A faint smile passed her lips as she shifted her form into that of the girl. “Thank you. I will never forget you.” The cruel irony of her words came out in the sweet innocent voice of the girl. “Her mother will be home soon. I should be going back.” A.B.A. held out her hands and scryed for the location of the Saints. Knowing their location she slipped back into her normal form and left in the darkness of night.
