"Hala, I know this is going to be hard to accept but he is not coming home. He is dead, and will not come home. I had spent 2 days searching for him to make sure that he wasn't floating with the debris." He told her. he then patted her on the shoulder. "I am sorry for your loss."

It felt like everything around her had just gone cold as Hala realized everything Yeligar was saying really was true. Vincent wasn't going to come home and scoop her up into his arms once he got through the door, they weren't going to have that second child they had been talking about, and Jasmine was going to grow up without her father. The war had taken him when he promised her it wouldn't.
Backing away from Yeligar, Hala looked up at him with wide, troubled eyes. Tears slowly came and began to run down her cheeks while her lips quivered--her whole body did. Hala remained silent for a very long, few minutes before she buried her face into her hands and let out a shrill, heart-broken scream, shaking the house and her daughter awake in the next room. Jasmine remained quiet, in bed, confused, and scared.
"Vincent...Vincent..." Hala sobbed into her hands, shaking uncontrollably, her life feeling so lost.

Yeligar stood there in silent as she cried and shirked. He knew that the next few days were going to be troublesome.

"Did you know he'd only just gotten home from another job you'd sent him on? He left two days later...he said this one was very important," Hala spoke through sobs, "didn't even get to spend that time with his family...we wanted a big family..."

"I know. He talked about having many children so that none of them would feel alone. I am truly sorry for your loss. I wish I didn't send him on that mission." he said as he looked at her. "How is Jasmine, by the way?"

Hala shook her head.
"You're not sorry. If you were sorry, you wouldn't be trying to push his death aside and talk to me so casually! If you were really sorry, you wouldn't have done any of this, you'd have had the proper foresight to know that something was going to go wrong! If you were really sorry, you wouldn't be standing here trying to hand me money as if my husband wasn't capable enough to provide for our family!!"
Silence hung awkwardly between them, Hala's cheeks flowed with tears and her chest became painful trying to keep herself from crying some more. She stepped forward, finding it almost impossible now to look at the man who used to be her good friend without a rage building up inside of her.
"Get out," she said, her voice rising, "Get out of my house!"

Yeligar was startled at Hala's sudden rage towards him. He bowed to her and said, "As you wish." He walked out, and he knew she was right. He shouldn't be sorry, after all he was the reason his friend and her husband are dead. He walked off into the night, with the guilt of his friend's death.

Hala paced around the table after Yeligar closed the door behind him, still shaking madly. It was really hard trying to keep calm, she'd just lost the most important person in her life and there was nothing around her to console her. Yeligar had only been out for a short time when Hala reached for the clear glass vase that she had sitting on the table and hurled it into the wall, its shattering echoed throughout the house. She sat in a chair and cried; Jasmine climbed out of bed to check on her mother (as hearing something break usually meant trouble), Hala cried even more when she looked down at Jasmine and saw Vincent looking up at her - they had the same eyes.
Hala hugged her close, promising things were going to be different. They had to be, this war had to end.
"Uh oh," Jasmine's voice broke Hala's thoughts as the little girl pointed over her mother's shoulder to the broken glass. Hala nodded, running her fingers through Jasmine's hair, unsure of how the next few years--let alone the days--were going to go.
The funeral for Vincent was held a couple of days later. Sympathetic stares made their way to Hala as she cuddled Jasmine close. Her eyes were tired, swollen, her whole face was worn from the non-stop crying she'd so obviously done. Jasmine looked around curiously from her mother's shoulder, not in the least understanding what was going on; as small children would be at a funeral she was uncomfortable, no one was smiling.
There were so many people here, and many of them also wore uniform that was just like or similar to Vincent. It was really no surprise then that Jasmine piped up with "Daddy?" as she scanned the crowd of people, wondering when her dad was going to show up; she wanted a cuddle from him, her mom wasn't too much fun right now. Hearing Jasmine call out for him though started Hala up again and as she began to cry Annabelle showed up by her side, scooping Jasmine up into her arms and taking her away.
Hala continued to cry. She watched a coffin be brought in--empty aside from a few of his belongings, they couldn't find the body however it was necessary for a place marker. She hated every minute of it and hoped that she'd go to bed tonight and wake up the next morning and it would have just been some horrible, realistic dream.

Yeligar was in back, dressed in some nice but yet made him blend in with the rest of the crowd. He had a hood on over his head so that his face, so Hala wouldn't get mad at him while he paid his final respects to his friend.

"I don't want your pity!"
Hala's voice echoed in the area; if she hadn't had all the attention earlier, she definitely did now with her outburst. She'd been handed the cape that Vincent usually wore, he'd left it behind on his final mission. With it was a very elaborately-decorated knife. The officers handing the items to her had made a few too many "I'm sorry for your loss, this must be hard for you" comments apparently.
One backed off right away and took his exit. The other simply took a step back and blinked at her for a brief moment before apologizing again. She waved her hand impatiently at him, refusing to hear any more.
"Just get away from me!" she spat, turning her back to him. Only then did he politely bow and then quickly take his leave.
Around out of earshot did some of the local people of Naghtundtag who showed at the funeral speak about Hala and Vincent. Most of the comments were along the lines of, "That poor girl, she's far too young to be a widow" and the usual "Bless that whole family."
Others, more bitter ones (why'd they even show up?) were "I could see this happening; that relationship was never going to work" and "That guy was no good from the start - look at her now, she used to be so sweet and now she's yelling at everyone".

Annabelle wandered around the funeral, bouncing Jasmine around in her arms to keep the girl entertained. The little girl squealed happily despite the sombre scene around them, every now and then she looked over her grandmother's shoulder and called out "Daddy~"
Annabelle shook her head, pulling Jasmine away to look at the small girl in the eyes as she spoke quietly.
"Daddy is not here, child. He is away."
Jasmine frowned, this wasn't fair. Annabelle smiled at her and tilted her head.
"Be good to your mother, little one. Look after her, she is very sad," she spoke again, gently.
"Uh oh," Jasmine responded and looked at her crying mother. Seeing the knife in her hands she added, "Mummy boo-boo?" Annabelle nodded and hugged her granddaughter close as she answered, "Yes. Mommy has a boo-boo."

As some people walked up to the casket, Yeligar decided to do the same, so that he could get out of here. He waited in line, then he finally had his chance to respect his friend for the last time. "Vincent, I am sorry that you will never have the family that you wanted to have. It was my fault you died." He then started to walk out of the building.

As Yeligar stepped past Annabelle she glanced over at him, frowning. Jasmine leaned over Annabelle's shoulder and watched him, smiling and reaching out at him with a giggle.
"Pirate!"
Annabelle blinked as she looked from Yeligar to Jasmine said, "Not a pirate, child."

Yeligar said nothing to Jasmine or Annabelle. He then left the building, and had to return to work. It was about 10 years later, Yeligar was looking at a map of the ocean. His mind was clouded with the death of his friend, Vincent, It was about a week away from the anniversary, and he felt as guilty as ever. "Sir?" A soldier by the name of Olaf Epps asked, "Do you need to lay down?" "No, I am o-" He started to say, then a large explosion from the ship's hull stopped him. A Chalybs ship then started to fire at the rest of the ship. Yeligar woke up on an island and he spent a year on it.
*Back to the current day*
"Hala... your life ended before your time, and until I can figure out how I can complete your life, your life's goal is my burden now." He pulled out a necklace with a long feather, and he looked at it. He looked around, and found an Shimmering oyster. He cracked it and opened it up. He pulled out a large pearl and put it at the end of the feather. He then walked away, with 3 lives to live.
